FINAL RD LIVE: Engstrom Takes Open in a Thriller

Sweden’s Julia Engstrom is the Worrells Women’s NSW Open Champion and she has done it in style with the shot of the day on the final hole.

The teenager rifled a five iron to about 18 inches for an unmissable birdie, while the leader for the past two days, Manon De Roey, missed the green left then couldn’t save par.

The win is the first for the second year professional, and a portent for things to come in what could be an outstanding career.

2.00pm: Artis Calls time on Pro career

Bec Artis has signed off on life as a Touring professional with a birdie on her very last holier competitive golf. A decade long career behind her today was an emotional one, and she was surrounded by plenty of nieces and nephews to watch her farewell.

1.30pm: Game On or Too Little, Too Late?

Is it game on?

A brace of birdies on 11, 12 and 13 has seen Camilla Lennarth jump into outright third at 12 under too be three behind De Roey, while a birdie on the par 5 12th for Engstrom has seen her move to within two of the leader.

De Roey, who birdied the 12th has given it straight back on the very next hole to be back where she started, at 15 under.

Back-to-back birdies for the Atthaya Thitikul have helped her into a tie for third, but still a distant five back from the leader, Manon De Roey.

Camilla Lennarth, who has proven to be a fan favourite all week, has grabbed a second birdie for the day to join the Thai at 10 under.

Scotland’s Kylie Henry has the best round of the day going on-course, and is currently four under with just a couple holes to play. Impressively she has also kept the bogeys from her card all day.

FINAL RD LIVE: Engstrom Takes Open in a Thriller 6

Manon De Roey is back at the score she started on – 15-under, but the question remains; Can anyone chase her down?

With nine holes left, the championship is still up for grabs and as golf purists know, it doesn’t really start until the back nine on Sunday anyway, so buckle up and here goes…

Julia Engstrom seems the woman most likely and the 18-year old looks mighty impressive today. With just the lone bogey on the 5th, she has crafted a handy two under 34 with birdies on the 2nd, 3rd, and another on the 9th to the danger.

Three golfers are now tied for third at 9 under, Thitikul, Dagar, and Lennarth.

11.45am Camilla finally makes a putt!

It was a long time coming for Camilla Lennarth, and she has finally made a birdie on the final day. She is back to 9 under and still in with a chance of running down de Roey.

11.20am Manon makes it four once more

Manon De Roey has jumped back out to a four shot lead. The Belgian has grabbed a birdie on the par four 5th, just as Engstrom made her first mistake of the day with a bogey.

The other Swede in the group, Camilla Lennarth, has made a steady start with five straight pars.

Thailand’s Atthaya Thitikul has jumped into a tie for 4th alongside the Indian Star Diksha Dagar at 8-under. With only 10 holes left in her round. However, the bubbly golfer form the Land of Smiles has her work cut out if she is going to make a late round charge.

Soo Jin Lee of Sydney looks like she has a lock on the honour of being the low Australian in the field this week. She is currently at 5-under and is five in from of Breanna Gill.

Grace Kim still holds the Low Amateur spot, however, she is having a disappointing day, currently four over and playing the ninth hole.

10.30am: Has the challenge begun?

Julia Engstrom made an early move on the leader.

A birdie-bogey turnaround on the second hole followed by a second Engstrom birdie on the third has seen Manon’s lead cut to two.

An unwanted three putt from the leader, followed by a walk in birdie from Engstrom on the second has sent a murmur through the following gallery.

Engstrom, who turns 19 later this month, is the youngest ever winner of the British Ladies Amateur Golf Championship (now known as the British Women’s Amateur) and has amassed almost 100,000 Euro in career earnings in just two short years.

The final group pose for a photo before teeing off.

The final group has teed off in the 2020 Worrells Women’s NSW Open.

Overnight leader Manon De Roey, no doubt juggling some nerves on the first tee, pushed her opening drive right and into the trees. She quickly recovered however, and managed to find a path through the shrubs with her second to safely reach the green. A two putt par from about 45 feet saw her stay at 15-under.

Sweden’s Julia Engstrom and Camilla Lennarth, playing in the final group alongside De Roey, both reached the fist safely in two. It was Engstrom though that had the best chance to convert, however her birdie chance from about 12 feet just slid by.

Biggest mover of the final groupings is Scotland’s Michele Thomson, who has birdied the second and third to jump into a tie for 6th at seven under.
