St. Michael’s golfer Claire Shin is in the top position following the opening round of the first Women’s NSW Open Regional Qualifying event, held at Mollymook Golf Club.
The 19-year-old was the only player to go under par, carding a solid one-under 71.
“Not much to say, I just kept going through what I did in the practice round, and that gave me at least two birdies today,” Claire shared with a smile.
“I’m really happy with that – it’s a good accomplishment.”
Just back from competing in the rigorous LPGA Q-School in the United States, Shin is finding her rhythm again after some recent challenges.
“Since I came back from America, my game hasn’t been that great with changing swings and all that, but today was really surprising. I played really well, so I feel I’ve got it back. I’m super excited.”
Shin’s confidence is high, though she admits that tomorrow’s final round will be crucial. She’s no stranger to this position either – last year, she led after the first round at the same event.
“It feels like déjà vu,” she said.
“I feel like it’s gotten tougher, but if I do well tomorrow, then maybe I have a chance to win it this time.”
The competition, however, is close. Just one shot behind are Coffs Harbour local Amelia Mehmet-Grohn, Illawarra’s Danni Vasquez, and New Zealand’s talented Keh sisters, Wenyung and Siyi. Another Keh sister, Munchin, is tied for sixth alongside Queensland’s Justice Bosio, both just two strokes off the lead.
With a $50,000 prize pool and two coveted spots in the 2025 Women’s NSW Open at Wollongong Golf Club up for grabs, the pressure is on.
The final round tees off at 8 a.m., with live coverage beginning at 10 a.m. on the Women’s NSW Open website and via the SEN App.
Claire Shin is ready to tackle the challenge ahead, with a clear strategy in mind: “I’m just going to play easy, rest well, not stress too much, and just play my golf.”
