Hillier Sets Sights On Women’s NSW Open Return

Whitney Hillier has learned not to take a single tee time for granted.

On the eve of the fifth 2026 Ford Women’s NSW Open Regional Qualifying event at Moss Vale Golf Club, Hillier arrives with perspective, gratitude and a clear goal. She hasn’t yet secured her place in this year’s Open at Wollongong, and with two spots available on Thursday, the equation is simple.

“I’d love to win it,” Hillier said.

“There’s two spots and I’ve got to get one of the two. I really want to play in Wollongong. That’s a huge goal for me.”

For Hillier, this week marks her first appearance in the regional qualifying series. It’s also another step in a long-awaited return to full-time competition after what she describes as a “bizarre three years” battling illness.

Behind that absence was a prolonged health battle, as Hillier sought answers for symptoms that would ultimately be diagnosed as a COVID vaccine-related illness.

“I’ve never played the qualifier before,” she said.

“After a few years off, it’s good to be back playing, and hopefully I can get a spot for the NSW Open.

“It’s just so nice to be back playing properly and feeling healthy again. I’m really happy.”

The former Ladies European Tour regular has been easing her way back into tournament golf over the past fortnight, testing herself in mixed fields and against male professionals, a challenge she believes has sharpened her game.

“It’s been good. It’s actually been quite tough to play against the boys,” she said.

“They’ve lifted my game a little bit, which is a great incentive. I played well last week in Castle Hill, so I’m feeling good about tomorrow.”

Hillier’s connection to the Women’s NSW Open stretches back more than a decade. She played the championship regularly during its years at Oatlands and recalls several strong finishes.

“I’ve played numerous,” she said.

“Back in the day — 10, 15 years ago. I think I’ve had a couple of top 10s, top 15s here or there. I haven’t won it yet, that’s all I know. But I’ve always enjoyed playing.”

A return to the championship at Wollongong would carry extra significance in 2026. The event forms part of the co-sanctioned WPGA Tour of Australasia and Ladies European Tour swing, a crucial stretch for players building or rebuilding status.

“That would mean a lot,” Hillier said of teeing it up in Wollongong.

“It’s the start of the LET slash WPGA season on this side. It’s a big run, the first four events. To be able to start in Wollongong, that’d be a dream for me.”

Hillier holds WPGA status and a medical exemption on the LET, with the task now to re-rank and work her way back up the ladder.

“It’s all good,” she said.

“That’s life and golf and health in general. Mentally, I’m just really happy to be back playing.”

A mindset built on patience, process and gratitude has shaped her return. Instead of chasing results, Hillier is concentrating on the fundamentals.

“Mainly my energy is there now,” she said.

“As long as I can play 72 holes and compete, I’m very, very happy. I’ve got mini goals, daily goals that I’m trying to tick every box now. Just stay patient.”

There is also the simple joy of being back inside the ropes. A relaxed practice round at Moss Vale, complete with tunes and good company offered a reminder of why she loves the game.

“We had the tunes on. We were playing RÜFÜS DU SOL all day,” she said with a smile.

“It was nice to have a relaxed group. We had a heap of fun, and I played well, so just getting ready for tomorrow now.”

Hillier is no stranger to Moss Vale Golf Club and believes the layout will provide a fair test, particularly on the greens.

“I’ve played Moss Vale a few times, and I’ve always enjoyed it,” she said.

“The greens were actually a little quicker today, so I think we’re getting ready for tomorrow now. I’m really excited to play.”

Excitement, after all, is something she hasn’t felt consistently in recent years. Now, healthy and competitive again, Hillier stands 18 holes away from another chance to return to one of her favourite events.

Round One of the Moss Vale Regional Qualifying Event will get underway from 8:30 AM tomorrow morning, with the final round to be broadcast live on Kayo from 11 AM on Friday.
